When I first started researching my family history, I went into it little bit blinkered, I would say, I was not prepared for some of the shocks, surprises and discoveries that lay ahead. Not only that, I was also burdened with the pressure of knowing things and whether I should share them or not? I am sure a lot of you have been or will be in a similar position yourself?

Family Secrets and what to do with them?

I have my full tree on Ancestry.com. It's a public tree because with my research I also hope to help others that may be looking for the same people and information. Any "bad & Ugly" is history that can't be changed and may be of interest. What was, was.

If you find a family member was a child molester, keep it to yourself and don't write it down.

Hi Paul,

If a person is living there are privacy considerations. Unless that person has given permission to allow their name and details to be made public, that information should be kept private and only be made available to approved family members. Thats my opinion and how my tree has been prepared.

Privacy laws can vary. The related link discusses some issues relating to privacy in various countries and family history sites.

I can see why someone would want to keep living people private but dead relatives should be made available.

Many times in my research, I have come across someone with a "private" tree that contains a relative of mine I've been looking for, only to be thwarted because the tree IS private. I've contacted these tree owners asking for information only to be ignored. A lot of these private tree holders feel that people just want free info with no work on their own part. I've seen this, but any info I can provide anyone , I'll be glad to supply. Who am I to determine that I am just talking to a lazy person. I feel private tree owners that ignore others requesting information they have, is just ignorant.
